with the clintons, they had a very long history and years of service. how do you manage through a crisis? what happens when that prices outside starts to shake the confidence inside? how do you get control of a narrative that is escaping? all those things are available when you look at 2008 and even in 2012. some people get their lessons from the board room. some people get them from the classroom. some people get them from playing field. some people get them from the battlefield. i get mine from the campaign trail. personal and organizational success. we will talk a little about a few things tonight. i want to do three things tonight. first, i want you to love campaigns the way i do. we'll talk a little about what it's like to be on a campaign. i will tell a little bit of my story for the student trying to navigate your way to success, second. so maybe we can open up some questions around that. finally, question and answer. i hope we can explore a little bit about language and by experience, talk about what people are seeing and take some of these lessons a way to our everyday life. we will s

. that is not going to happen. [applause] one of the main reasons record surpluses under bill clinton were turned into record deficits under george bush is because we put two wars and two tax cuts on a credit card. and now governor romney wants another $5 trillion in tax cuts that he can't pay for? not if i have anything to say about it. that's not going to happen. [applause] we are not going to let this country fall backward. not now. not with so much at stake. we've got to move forward. we need to invest in small business and manufacturers who create jobs here in the united states. we need to recruit 100,000 math and science teachers, train two million workers at community college, bring down the cost of college tuition. we need to -- [cheers and applause] we need to cut our oil imports in half. create thousands more jobs in clean energy. we need to use the savings from ending the wars in iraq and afghanistan to help pay down our deficit and put people back to work doing some nation building right here at home. that's the agenda we need. that's how you strengthen the middle class. that's how yo

clinton, it takes some nerve to attack something that you voted for yourself. now what we need to do -- and this is a clear example. she wants to balance the deficit on the shoulders of our seniors, middle class and our students, while protecting tax breaks for multimillionaires and corporations that ship jobs overseas. >> dr. ruiz, thank you so much. we go to the last question of the night. erica, you have the honors. >> congresswoman, critics have described bolt of you as politicians who will simply vote in lock-step with your political party leadership. can you name some policies that president obama has implemented that you support? and dr. ruiz, when it's your turn, can you name policy points where you disagree with president obama? >> thank you, erica, sure. i support the bills that i passed out of the house and got passed out of the senate and made it to the president's desk and signed into lot. the safety improvement act is one. i support other bills that he has passed that he has supported. it's a lot easier for me to say what i don't support. we haven't talked about energy.

, folks, the bipartisan group called the tax policy center made up of former bush and former clinton economic experts, that is why they said that the romney-ryan tax plan would in fact raise taxes on middle-class families with a child an average of $2,000 a year. $2,000 a year. and by the way, every model looked at it from the so-called -- the american enterprise institute -- they say the same thing. taxes will have to be raised on the middle-class if they succeed with the tax cut. folks, it is time to lift the burning off the middle class, and a double down on the great recession -- lift the burden off the middle class, not double down on the great recession that hit them. [applause] as a consequence of the great recession, middle-class families lost $16 trillion in wolf appeared mostly in equity in their homes. they saw them evaporate and their pension plans. it is time for everyone to chip been come including the wealthy. as i said last night, we should not be surprised at their continued opposition to everyone chipping in. these other folks to talk about 47% of the american peopl
